As a Legal Resident of Uruguay, you are eligible to request Uruguayan Citizenship and a second passport, provided you are 18 years of age or older and meet certain requirements.
The citizenship application request is filed at Uruguay’s Corte Electoral (Electoral Court). You must file for citizenship in person, presenting all documentation at once.
After applying, it will take an average of 6 to 8 months for the citizenship to be granted.
Legal residents may apply for Uruguayan citizenship when they have three years of proven history and bond to the country if married, or five years for those who are single.
IMPORTANT: the date considered for the three or 5 year calculation is your arrival date to the country, when you first filed for Residency (and not on the day you obtain your Legal Resident status).
When citizenship is granted the applicant receive his/her "Carta de Ciudadanía" stating his/her new legal status in the country.
